Originally released in 1993—the first Air Jordan to debut during Michael Jordan's initial retirement from basketball—the AJ9 was designed by Tinker Hatfield and built around the theme of MJ's identity as a global icon. The Particle Grey colorway draws a clear nod to the fan-favorite "Barons" palette, itself a reference to the Birmingham Barons, the minor league baseball team MJ played for during his hiatus from the NBA.

The upper pairs a black nubuck and textile construction with tonal stitching and a speed lace system, while a Particle Grey nubuck mudguard wraps the heel and extends up the mid-cut collar. University Red accents appear on the Air Jordan tongue tag and a molded Jumpman emblem at the heel, providing the only sharp contrast against the neutral base.
