The Air Jordan 5 debuted in 1990, designed by Tinker Hatfield with inspiration drawn from World War II fighter-plane nose art — giving the silhouette its signature shark-tooth midsole, reflective tongue, lace locks, and translucent outsole. The "Black Metallic" colorway was one of four original 1990 launches and quickly became a cornerstone of the Air Jordan 5 lineup, introduced to the world alongside Spike Lee's Mars Blackmon campaign.

The 2025 Reimagined edition marks the colorway's 35th anniversary. It retains the classic Black/White-Metallic Silver/Fire Red palette while introducing a premium black nubuck upper with reflective 3M piping tracing the shoe's design lines — an upgrade from any prior retro. White laces reference the Player Exclusive pairs Michael Jordan wore on-court in 1990 game footage, and the traditional stitched "Nike Air" heel logo is replaced with a reflective silver version. A second black lace pair is included in the box.

The Reimagined treatment preserves Hatfield's original structural details — the bump-out collar, mesh-like side panels, metallic silver shark teeth, visible Air unit in the heel, and the upside-down "Air Jordan" text inside the tongue — while pushing each element further than any prior retro of this colorway.
